Mike Plays New Electric Upright Bass

Mike has begun playing his newly acquired Stagg 3/4 scale Electric Upright Bass, pictured here at the Bull, Riseley,
on the night of our Halloween, trio gig.
He will still be playing his bass guitars for certain numbers too. The electric
upright bass does have a special something in its sound though!

Marlowfm Radio
Annie and I had a visit, on Friday 19th June, at our duo gig at the Brickmakers Arms in High Wycombe, from Paul Mansell and Andy Fowler, from Marlowfm radio. They have been playing tracks from our new album and recorded our gig on a hard drive recorder. They are going off air for a while after June 20th but can be listened to online see http://www.marlowfm.co.uk/.

We had a great night at Central Studio. If you didn't come along and you were interested to see some of the light / art show we had on the big screen, you can get an idea of it from my Deviant Art web site at:-

Here's 2 reviews of the concert, emailed from members of the audience.

Another brilliant night Elaine from you and your great band. Loved every minute of it. The hanging screen and the costume change were another welcome new addition to the show. Also great to see you being the sole act now at Central Studios, shows you have made big progress from being a support act first time around and sharing the stage last time out with Blue Onyx. Maybe the step up away from the pub circuit is not that far away. The new songs from Metamorphosis fitted in seamlessly with the older numbers, just like old friends.(Love the new album by the way). Not a lot more I can say about the music as it just gets better each time out, great songs played by some brilliant musicians, congratulations to you all, look forward to next time.
Cheers,
Martin

Hi Elaine, Just to say that what an enjoyable concert it was! It was especially good to see Annie taking more prominence than she used to years ago. Along with Gavin, she is KS's USP (unique selling point)! (Although I'd like to see her use her saxophone more). I also think Gavin plays as well as Sim did, although I do miss the latter's guitar riffs. Nevertheless, a brilliant concert - and the new CD is superb, too!
With very best wishes
Barry

Annie meets Moody Blues flute player, Norda Mullen
Annie does some jamming in one of her local venues now and then and recently, by an amazing coincidence, the new flute player from the Moody Blues, Norda Mullen, came in and, because Annie was doing some mad improvisation with a guitarist there, they got chatting. Norda is now very interested to see a Kindred Spirit gig and may come to one of our June gigs, which is when she’ll next be around. (She lives and tours a lot with the Moody blues in America). Here is an interesting You Tube link to an interview with Norda about how she was picked to play with the Moody Blues:-

And here is some You Tube footage of Annie in action at last year’s Central Studio concert. (We should have some footage of this year’s Central
Studio concert in a while, which looks like it will have some interesting close up shots here and there – as we used more video cameras this time
and had some excellent help from our friend Nigel Allen):-

Festivals for 2009

The band at
Richmond May Fair in May 2009
The Richmond May Fair - May 9th
This is a day long fair (around 10am - 5.30pm) held on Richmond Green, Surrey. There are plenty of interesting stalls, including craft, charity and refreshment. There is also a fun fair plus the main entertainment stage, of course, which has a diverse range of interesting acts, including things like dances from the Richmond Ballet school, brass band concerts and acrobatics / clowns. See the link above for the full programme on the green stage. The full Kindred Spirit band have become something of a regular feature at the Richmond May Fair (our banner photograph shows us performing at the 2007 event). We performed at around 12.45pm, just after the morris men this year on an unusually, covered stage. We were blessed with great weather and a really good turn out. It was a brilliant day! We have had some wonderful feedback from the entertainment organiser, who wrote to say
"We have had many compliments from members of the public about thwe entertainment programme on the Green this year"
He has also already invited the band back for next year's special 40th anniversary Richmond May Fair, which will probably be even more exciting!

The
Beacon Hill Beer Festival – May 29th
This two day event started on Friday, May 29th with live music from the full Kindred Spirit band and continues on Saturday with other live bands. We had a very enjoyable night with a good sized stage and hall, good lighting and, more importantly, a large crowd of happy beer drinkers (who even cheered enthusiastically when we hit the first chord of the sound check)! There were around 20 award winning, championship beers(sourced from all around the UK) on offer as well as a legendary selection of local (Hampshire) ciders and a selection of over 10 chilled, bottled lagers (some even from Finland, Trinidad and Peru)! There was also a BBQ to enjoy in the fantastic weather this weekend, which catered for both meat lovers and vegetarians.

Sunbury Riverside Arts Festival – July 11th – You Tube Footage now viewable

The Sunbury Riverside Arts Festival is organised by Sunbury and Shepperton Arts Association. This week long festival incorporates a series of events in the performing arts, visual arts, craft, literature, and children’s events. The full Kindred Spirit band performed an evening concert in the Riverside Arts Centre, in Sunbury, beginning at 8pm. The sound and lighting was fantastic and we had a great evening.

September 5th
Weyfest!!

This was a weekend music festival set in the beautiful, wooded
Rural Life Centre in Tilford. There were several stages and this year the full Kindred Spirit band performed on the "Old Kiln" stage at 1.10pm, on the same day (Saturday 5th) as Jethro Tull and many other great bands! We had a large and appreciative crowd, many of whom took leaflets and bought a copy of our new album.

Review - Staines Weblog - Adpontes
Another of my favourites, ‘Kindred Spirit’  with their electro-folk prog-roots, also put on a fine show. I was still humming ‘The Chain’ (Fleetwood Mac) days later, but I also loved their self-penned tunes like Meta-Mor-Phosis and Dragonfire.  Band leader Elaine Samuels has a sweet yet powerful ‘Country & Western’ type  voice, well suited to the very English misty, moody and magical themes. Annie Parker adds some smoke and fire on flute, whilst Gavin Jones creates drama and majesty on electric violin. Mike Hislop on bass and Alan Barwise on drums provide the rhythm to the polished, meticulously crafted songs from this band.   © Neil_Mach,  September 2009

Prince of Wales Beer Festival – October 18th in the afternoon
This annual weekend festival held at the CAMRA award winning Prince of Wales pub, in Farnborough, features truly wonderful tasting beers and some great live music over a whole weekend. The Kindred Spirit duo of Annie and Elaine have become an annual Sunday afternoon feature – back by popular demand!

Recording News

This new CD is now ready to buy! We recorded, mixed and mastered all 13 tracks as a live band (at Airplay Studios)
and the masters were manufactured by Liquid Bubble. You can buy a copy from our Metamorphosis Album Page
.

We put Annie and Gavin in one room and Mike, Alan and Elaine in the other – not because we fight when we are together but so that, with Mike and Gavin DI’d, we could record every instrument together live. This can be stressful at times!

Elaine had to make her live tracks, guide ones (because of drum sound bleed) and came back to record her master guitar and vocals at a later session. We still have some mixing and mastering to go.

All the track clips are now up on our Metamorphosis Album Page. Both Annie and Gavin have recorded some fantastic live solos for this album and because we have been recording in a live setting the overall feel is a really exciting one!
